FAQs
A: Our services have a definite family atmosphere – people of all ages singing and worshipping together. Attendance in each of our services is around 250 people, so you won’t feel like everyone is watching you, but neither will you feel lost in a crowd. What you will notice is that people are friendly and caring. We enjoy each other’s company, and we enjoy all kinds of music together – from hymns to choruses, from reflective to celebrative, from country gospel to a more contemporary sound. Our preaching is Bible-centered and expositional, with an intentional desire to obey God’s Word and apply it to everyday life. Both the 9:30am , and 11am services last about 65 minutes. The sermon lasts from 30 to 40 minutes, and we have a time of response at the end. We also have a simulcast service at 11:00 in our North Worship Center. It is a more laid back atmosphere with room to stretch out.
A: If you have young children, the best place to park is in the back of the church. Come in the glass doors and follow the hallway to our AVENUE Kids check-in counter. If you do not have children, or if you need special assistance you can park in our front parking lot.
A: Though many people dress up somewhat to attend church, we definitely don’t have a dress code. The majority of men do not wear a tie (just in case you were wondering). We want you to come and worship with us, so please don’t let this hold you back from coming.
A: Our pastors preach using the New American Standard Bible (1995 update) because it is easy to understand and is a very accurate translation for Bible study. Many of our church family bring other versions to church because they find that it helps them understand the Bible even better when they can compare two different translations together.
A: No we don’t. We do give our visitors a little loaf of homemade bread as a welcome gift.
A: In cooperation with the Southern Baptist Convention, we actively support local, national, and international missionaries with financial and prayer support. In addition to supporting missions through the SBC Cooperative Program, Dayton Avenue supports several of our own members serving with other Mission Agencies. Next to our church is our Mission Home which we make available to missionaries who are come back to the states for rest and retraining. Finally, we receive special offerings during the year which funnel 100% of the funds directly to the missionaries and to our church family serving in short-term missions. In all, over 20% of our budget goes toward missions.
A: We believe it is very important that every member of Dayton Avenue be part of a LifeGroup. LifeGroups are smaller groups of people that “Do Life” together. We want to see these groups encompass 4 parts – Bible study – fellowship light (fun/social) – fellowship heavy (support in times of need) and missions. A: Our mid-week Wednesday night is packed with all sorts of opportunity. Come out for our weekly prayer meetings, men’s or women’s bible studies, Youth Ministry or Children’s ministry, which includes Awana during the school year. We also provide Nursery & Preschool Care for your special little ones! Bring your family or friends and get involved in a study or ministry.
A: Yes! Our church is committed to actively supporting the greater Xenia community in which we serve as a way of demonstrating the love of Jesus Christ. Many groups use our church facilities (home schooling groups, support groups, etc.) which makes Dayton Avenue a community hub. We also participate and support various community ministries that serve in specialized ways. Currently, we support a Free Health Clinic ministry (started by a team from DABC) – a first for Greene County that has been serving our community since January 2012.
A: Every 8-10 weeks we host a New Member Information Luncheon on a Sunday afternoon from 12:30-2:45. This informal session is designed to help you learn more about what we believe, how our church functions, and answer any questions you may have… we’ll even feed you lunch! Requirements for membership include placing your trust in Jesus Christ for forgiveness of sins and baptism as a believer in Jesus Christ. You can read specific information about the doctrinal positions we hold and teach in the “What we believe” section.”
A: Our church is governed by the members of the congregation and thus the decisions are made by the consensus of the congregation. Various committees are appointed to oversee key areas such as personnel, finances, missions, and building and grounds. Committees make recommendations to the church concerning major changes or needs. We currently also have monthly business meetings (2nd Wednesday of every month) to conduct routine business and receive reports.
A: We take the safety and security of the children and teens in our church seriously. All children’s workers must be approved through our careful child-protection policy process. Our preschool facilities are monitored to provide security. We will be happy to explain more about this as you check-in and register your child before services.
A: Our deacons are responsible for serving the needs of the church family. Deacons are not a decision-making body or an executive committee; they are a group of servant-leaders caring for the spiritual and physical needs of Dayton Avenue’s members. Those who are elected to serve are ordained by the church family to the office of deacon and thus commissioned to serve faithfully and in a manner consistent with their calling.
A: There is a wide variety of ministries in which you can serve, spanning from preschool and children’s ministry to music and prayer ministries. We believe that each believer is given gifts to use for the encouragement and edification of the church family and thus we encourage each one to find a place to serve.
